Infectious Diseases (ID)
Serological diagnosis of infectious diseases requires the detection of antigens or antibodies directed to viral, bacterial or parasite invaders.
Serum, plasma or CSF are used as specimen. In case of clinical indication of a fresh infection the simultaneous determination of paired serum samples taken within 2-4 weeks is helpful for the detection of antibody conversions or changes in the antibody titres. For some few diseases e.g. neuro-borreliosis or neuro-syphilis usage of serum and CSF paired samples ease diagnosis.
